Summary:
There is a strong need to set up ad hoc networks for various communications or in a rural area for instant communications and so the goal is to develop a cheap low cost high efficiency base station antenna. The proposed solution is cheap as it does not involve any tower (which is the most expensive part). Only the electronics and the antenna will be deployed close to the ground. This webinar deals with the deployment of cheap base station antennas that are yet capable of producing high gain if desired. There are theoretical predictions that if a base station antenna is deployed closer to the ground and tilted towards the sky it may provide higher electric field intensity than intuitively placing it on top of a high tower which costs more than the antenna itself. Furthermore, by tilting the antenna slightly towards the sky one will minimize the interference between direct ray and the reflected ray from the earth resulting in a further enhancement of the electric field intensity. Therefore deploying a simple antenna without the tower will make it quite cheap. The objective of this webinar is to present antenna radiated field measurements in various environments to show that indeed such conjectures remain valid in practice. In addition, a traditional Yagi-Uda antenna can be used as a low-cost antenna. The webinar will consist of 3 talks: principle of operation, followed by experimental results, and deployment using the Yagi-Uda antenna design.
